What this guide covers
A screenshot of a bright web page looks fine in a bright chat window. Pasted into a dark note, a dark chat or a dark document, it becomes a white rectangle that pulls the eye away from everything around it.
Dark Screenshots lets you adjust the picture before you share it. You can darken it, invert a white page, crop it, point at what matters, frame it and add a caption, all in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. This guide takes you through the steps from taking the picture to copying the result.
Step by step
- 1
Get the screenshot
Open an image file or drop it on the panel. Or press Capture screen, choose a window, tab or screen in your browser, and one frame is taken. Nothing is uploaded.
- 2
Darken it
Move the Darken slider until the picture sits calmly on the page. For a white page, turn on Invert so dark text becomes light. Auto dark sets a starting value for you.
- 3
Crop and rotate
Turn the picture a quarter turn at a time, then drag a box to keep only the part you need.
- 4
Point at what matters
Add an arrow, an outline or a highlight and pick the colour for each mark. Marks are drawn above the darkening, so the colour stays as you chose it.
- 5
Add a frame and a caption
Choose a tone for the frame, set the padding with one slider and write a short caption if you like. You can also combine up to twelve screenshots in a grid, side by side or stacked.
- 6
Copy or download
Press Copy to paste the picture into a chat, or Download to save a PNG at the full size of the screenshot.
Keeping a screenshot truthful
A darker screenshot should still explain the same thing as the original. Before you save a version for a tutorial or a support message, compare small interface labels, selected buttons and any warning colours with the original. If a red error has turned into a muddy brown, lower the darkening a little or draw your own mark above it, because marks keep the colour you chose.
Photographs inside a screenshot look odd when inverted, so use the Darken slider for those and keep Invert for white pages. If you need to show several steps in one picture, combine up to twelve screenshots in a grid or a column and apply one darkening and one frame to all of them.
Tips
- Capture one window or tab instead of the whole screen. A smaller picture is easier to read and share.
- Compare small labels and warning colours with the original before saving, especially for tutorials and support messages.
Good to know
- Some browsers and devices do not allow screen capture. In that case open an image instead.
- Photographs inside a screenshot look odd when inverted, so use Darken for those.
