Where your files go: privacy and permissions

What happens to a PDF, a book or a note when you open it here, what the library stores and what you can delete.

The tools on this website are built to work on your device. This page explains in plain words what that means. The full details are in the Privacy Policy.

Your files stay in your browser

When you open a PDF, an EPUB book, a Word document, a spreadsheet or an image, your browser reads the file and the tool works on it in the memory of the open tab. The file is not sent to our servers. The same is true for text you paste and for screenshots.

You can check this yourself. Open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab and load a file. You will not see an upload request.

A diagram: your file goes to a browser tab on your device and optionally to My Library, but never to our servers
Everything inside the dashed line stays on your device.

What is saved, and only when you ask

My Library saves a file only when you press a button such as Add to my library. It stores a copy of the file, a list entry with its name and size, and extras such as PDF highlights and EPUB reading progress. All of this lives in your browser on this device. It is not synced to other devices and we cannot recover it for you.

Settings, notes and the position where you stopped reading are also kept in your browser’s local storage.

How to delete it

  • One file: open My Library and press Delete next to it. The saved copy and its highlights are removed.
  • Every saved file: in My Library press Clear all files.
  • Everything for this site: clear the site data for dark-shiftmode.com in your browser settings. This also removes notes and settings.

Deleting is permanent. Use Download in My Library first if you want to keep a copy of a file.

Permissions

The website itself does not ask for special permissions. Dark Screenshots asks your browser for permission before it captures a screen, and you choose what to share. The browser extension asks for access to the pages you visit, because that is how it can change their colours.

Third-party services

When a page loads, your browser may contact services we use to display it. Fonts come from Google Fonts and the PDF library comes from a content delivery network. These services can see basic request details, such as your IP address, as with any website.
